The “Fedora” award has been created with the clear intent to bring innovation in opera field which seems to be motionless nowadays compared to others. It’s a stimulating challenge we do propose while we are conscious that in such a multi-structured modern musical society in which various languages more or less dangerously interact, renovation has always to be connected with evolution and new forms of the language itself.

We would like to make clear that, excepting the imperative limitation of instrumental ensemble size, we would like composers to be free to express themselves with a wide range of languages while experimenting any new sound research using symphonic, rhythmical symphonic or totally alternative instrumental ensemble potentialities.

The association “Atelier la Voce dell’arte” is realizing a centre of production connected to the award, to form the singers and build the settings autonomously for the performances. This year the association starts an important co-operation with Wiener Kammer Oper. The artistic direction of WKO will consider the possibility to perform the winning opera during the season of the theatre.

ART. 1 The competition is open to composers of any nationality without age limit.

ART. 2 To be eligible for the competition, compositions must be unpublished, unperformed and never been awarded prizes in other competitions.

ART.3 The Competition is organized as follows:

During the first phase, participants should forward an opera plan, sending n.5 copies of the summary (synopsis), libretto and extract of the score lasting at least 10 minutes by 15/03/2009. On the 25/03/2009, after the examination of the works, the Jury will choose at maximum three opera plans. The composers of the three selected opera plans shall come to Verbania to meet the Jury, and present their opera plans on a date that will be later communicated by the secretariat of the Competition.

In the second phase the three selected composers shall complete the opera and send it no later than the 15th of August 2009. The finalist participants shall send 5 copies of the scores, the librettos and the synopsis, besides a copy of the score for singing and piano. By the 10th of October 2009 the Jury will select one of the three operas. The winning opera will be performed in 2009/2010 season. For every deadline the date of the postmark will bear witness.

ART. 4 The librettos can be written in Italian, German, English, and French. Any case, in addition, participants shall provide a short synopsis of the libretto typewritten in Italian.

ART. 5 The scores must conform to the following specifications:

- No more than 6 soloist voices;

- Eventual presence of a chamber choir (of up to 12 singers);

- Instrumental ensemble of no more than 15 performers (electro-acoustic instruments as bass, keyboards and guitar and are permitted);

- A duration of not more than 50 minutes and no less than 40 minutes;

- Only one scene setting.

ART. 6 The world premiere of the winning opera will take place in Verbania in stage form with costumes and settings during 2009/2010 season. Later on the opera could also be performed in other Italian theatres and at Wiener Kammer Oper. The not winning two operas could also been performed in concert form according to the decision of the Association. In the period between the date of the submission of the operas to the competition and the date of the performance in Verbania in 2009/2010, the winning opera and the other two finalist ones cannot:

- be performed or presented in a concert form;

- be filmed and recorded on audio-video supports;

- be broadcast by radio or television;

- be the subject of any contract regarding the exclusive right of edition and/or performance, of filming and/or recording.

Participants shall accept the decisions of the Art director of the Association concerning all the aspects of the performance. The prizes for the winning composer of the Competition will consist in the performance of his work. The winning opera will be filmed during the performances and recorded for eventual radio and TV broadcasting and no money is due to the composer for any radio or TV reproduction.

ART. 7 The composers of the operas performed will be hosted in Verbania on the occasion of the performance.
